You have to understand that what made the old system great wasn't that it was packed with features. It was just simple and intuitive. The fact that you have to "spend some time learning" how to use the new system is just proof that it sucks. Adding more and more links to the front page isn't going to make it better, it'll just make people more confused.

Remember, the great thing about the archive is that it makes all this great material available to the general public. If you need a CS degree to navigate the site, the general public will just get frustrated and not use it. You might as well put the LMA on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard".
